Mites are very small arachnids. They burrow under the skin and reproduce. The animal's bedding becomes infested. The reproduction cycle is approximately 21 days. Mites can survive in the environment for 3 weeks.

Symptoms:

1. Severe itching
2. Hair loss throughout the body, particularly eyes, around eyes, legs, and groin.
3. Lesions on ear margins vary in degree from mild hair loss to crusty lesions
4. Swelling, particularly of the eyelids which impairs the animal's eyesight and reduces hunting abilities for predator species, leading to starvation.
5. Inflammation
6. Scales and thickening of the skin
7. Secondary Infection
8. The animal usually has a foul order

Mange can be very easily treated. If you need help, please leave a post and we'll tell you what to do...

Here is a pic of Mange....

A couple of drops of Revolution for cats or small dogs will clear most cases of mites up quickly.  Slight cases of mites often will be overcome by the squirrel's immune system.

How would you treat mange in a wild squirrel? I have one of my yard buddys that has it. What could I treat him with if I didn't want to trap him. I think trapping him would kill him from the stress alone.

One way is by using Ivermectin, but be VERY careful you do NOT use too much, as you could overdose and kill the squirrel!    They say to give 0.2-0.4 mg 10 days apart.  Can you break a peanut apart, put some peanut butter inside it, along with the Ivermectin, and make sure your yard buddy eats it in front of you, and then repeat 10 days later?

Upon further revue Chickabee and I think some tried to raise this little one and dropped him off in our yard today. This kind of thing takes awhile to come about and this little guy looks malnourished to us. He looks like one of those scalded milk baby's. He is skin and bones and going bald. He just showed up at the morning feeding today. That is what makes me think someone tried to raise him and failed miserable. They knew we feed the squirrels and released him here in our yard. Please give me your opinions on this.

OMG Jeff!   Can you trap this PRECIOUS little one?

That's either one bad case of mange, or it kind of looks like Kitten Fur Syndrome...aka...a form of MBD.

Here's some links I found with some causes for "Balding Disease"...

Gammas I think the stress of being caught alone would kill him. He looks like he has been on a bad diet since he was weened and on bad milk before that.

Do you have any Revolution?  If not I have some I can get to you.  All you would need to do is put a drop or two into something you will give him to eat.  Then about two weeks later you can give him a second dose and if needed another couple weeks later a third.  Revolution can be used orally and is much safer than is ivermectin.  He definitely has an extremely bad case.  It is also quite possible that he has something else going on because they normally fight off the mites pretty well with their immune system.  You are probably right that the stress from being caught might kill him.

I have had to treat several of my inside guys recently, including Abby and Jag, as they were losing hair and getting a bit lethargic.  So it appears the environment might be very good for the mites to proliferate.

It is just so strange that he just showed up today. Never seen him before today. That's what makes me think he was dropped off or let go from nearby. I have been feeding these outdoor squirrels for 2 years now twice a day and know all that come. He is a first time visitor. He is also very very skinny. I don't have any revolution left. I used my last a couple weeks ago.

I'll be glad to give you some.  Jag just all at once dropped his hair though so it can happen pretty quickly.  He has the back part of his body pretty well hairless now.  I treated him today and will probably retreat in a couple weeks.  Just to be sure we get them all.  Skinny may mean some other issue or it may be someone did drop him off.

The meds are going out in tomorrow morning's mail.  I didn't quite get to the post office today but will be doing so in the morning after feeding the babies.  I would guess it will get to you on Saturday.

I started him on Sulfatrim yesterday evening. He has some open wounds that either look like he fell or got into it with another squirrel. He is so small. He can't be more than 4 to 6 months old. He has shown up to eat 4 times now. Each time he has eaten 5 to six nuts then starts to bury them. I think he is staying in the huge oak across the street. He is starting to trust me as he see's the others do. Which makes it easy to give him the meds. I open a hazelnut and then drill a hole through it and fill the center with the medicine and let it soak it up. Worked every time so far. My little half tailed one that looked like he had pneumonia is getting all better that way too.

Yeah sometimes you have to be tricky with them.  That is great that he is trusting you like that.  The good part about Revolution is it works in one or two treatments normally and they are at least two weeks apart.

Well I got your package today Karen. Thanks a lot and the squirrels thank you too.
I got the revolution into one of them but the little bald guy never showed up today.
Maybe tomorrow, at least I am hopeful. I did get three days worth of sulfatrim in him though. Hopefully that will help with what ever else he has going on. I pray he shows up tomorrow.

Hopefully he will show up so you can get a dose of the Revolution in him, as it looks like that is what he needs most.

Well an update on Fester. We had to catch him about 3 weeks ago. He showed up with a badly broken right rear leg or ankle. He has been with us for 3 weeks now and is doing very well. The swelling in his leg and foot are gone. But his ankle is still swelled. That will take some time to heal. He has been on antibiotics for 2 weeks now and the revolution has done it's job. He is starting to grow his hair back. And you can no longer see his ribs. Although he is not a happy camper being here I think he does appreciated a warm dry place to rest and heal. Where he doesn't have to go out and scounge for food. We will get some new pics up shortly. He looks amazing compared to the pics above.

He sure is coming along nicely!  That is abcessing on his leg there.  If you can get that second shot into him I would do so.  Also a bit of silvadine on it when you do the shot might help.  That may have been a cat attack on his leg, at least a possibility.  The mites seem to be more or less gone now though which is great.  If you are concerned about that though you can put a couple more drops of the Revolution on him when you give him the shot. He is sure looking a lot better now than when you got him.  You guys have done a great job with him.
